Initial qualitative analysis: Citizens’ Jury on assisted dying

This briefing provides a summary of the considerations of the Citizens’ Jury on assisted dying, with analysis of why the Jury voted and recommended as they did.
Assisted dying

Our work on assisted dying includes the first Citizens’ Jury in England on the topic, which took place between April and June 2024. The Citizens’ Jury was an opportunity for a diverse group of 30 residents in England, from different walks of life, to learn about and discuss the complexities relevant to assisted dying.

Following our interim report of the Jury’s findings published in September 2024, this briefing gives a summary of the key Jury considerations. It is intended to show why the Jury voted as they did and why they made the recommendations described in the interim report.

This briefing is being published now to help inform current UK Parliamentary debate on The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill 2024-25, which receives its second reading on 29 November 2024.

A final report including in-depth analysis of the Citizens’ Jury and survey findings, will be published in early 2025.
