Invitation to tender: Nuffield Council on Bioethics horizon scan - review and update

This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher to make an important contribution to our periodic horizon scanning programme.

We have a strong track record of anticipating developments at the intersection of scientific advances and societal challenges. This ensures our work is relevant, timely, and influential. The successful candidate will review and bring up to date our ‘Long list’ - a set of concise summaries of topics that have been identified through previous horizon scanning activities. The Long list forms the basis of our annual infographic, which aims to illustrate a range of developments in biological and medical research that are likely to raise ethical issues in the short, medium, and long-term.

  • Payment: the fee for the commission is £8,500.
  • Date/duration: We are aiming for this work to be completed by Friday 30 June 2023.
  • Location: The work will be carried out remotely, with the possibility of meeting staff at our offices in London (Farringdon).

There will not be interviews, but the process may involve an informal conversation to discuss the commission.

Associate Director - External Affairs and Horizon Scanning

We are recruiting to the new role of Associate Director, External Affairs and Horizon Scanning. The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of our ambitious new strategy.

You will be responsible for the creation and delivery of an organisation-wide external engagement strategy to raise the profile and credibility of bioethics amongst decision-makers, including our approach to public affairs, media, digital engagement and stakeholder management. Responsibilities will include overseeing the strategic development of our new Horizon Scanning programme. This work will be outward-facing and future oriented, with the aim of identifying and communicating the key ethical challenges arising from developments in bioscience and health.

  • Salary: Salary starting from £70,000 per annum.
  • Contract: Permanent. Full-time (35 hours). Part-time arrangements considered.

Horizon Scanning Manager

We are hiring a Horizon Scanning Manager to develop and lead our horizon scanning programme. This is a new role created as part of our next 5-year strategy and a unique opportunity to combine futures expertise with the fascinating and challenging field of bioethics.

Building on what we have achieved so far, the Horizon Scanning Manager will develop an approach to horizon scanning that reaches an even broader range of stakeholders and fully embeds futures thinking across our organisation.

  • Salary: Salary starting from £47,444 per annum.
  • Contract: Permanent. Full-time (35 hours). Part-time arrangements considered.
  • Location: Our offices are in London (Farringdon), with the ability to work from home for part of the week.

Visiting Senior Researcher - Neuroscience, Genetics, and Education

We are seeking a Visiting Senior Researcher to undertake a research project to examine the implications of advances in neuroscience, genetics and genomics for understanding learning in young people, and for education policy and practice, with a particular focus on ethical questions raised.

This is an excellent opportunity for an established researcher to define and deliver a research programme in a dynamic, ideas-driven and policy-facing setting.

  • Salary: starting from £47,444 per annum.
  • Contract: 18 month fixed term contract. Full-time working (35 hours). Part-time and secondments considered.
  • Location: Our offices are in London (Farringdon), with the ability to work from home for part of the week.
