The Council has recently appointed communications specialists Opinion Leader to organise and facilitate a deliberative workshop with members of the public on issues raised by dementia.

Fifty people, recruited to broadly reflect the UK population, will be asked to consider evidence, debate the issues and give their informed views on dementia. The workshop will take place in Birmingham in early August 2008.

Topics to be considered include: societal perceptions of dementia; the balance between encouraging maximum freedom for people with dementia against minimising risks of harm; and decision making about care and treatment.

The views of the participants will be considered by the Working Party when they meet in September, and will form part of a wider programme of evidence-gathering activities. The Working Party will go on to prepare its report, which is expected to be published by the Council in 2009.
