The Council’s Director, Hugh Whittall, was invited to meet with the US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues in Atlanta last week. At the Commission’s third meeting of the year, Hugh gave a presentation on how the Council works, and on the findings of its recent report on medical profiling and online medicine. The Presidential Commission was keen to hear about the Council’s unique method of working. On a case-by-case basis, the Council develops ethical frameworks and principles that can be applied coherently and consistently to the issue in hand, and which underpin the conclusions and recommendations reached in the Council’s reports.View a video of Hugh Whittall's presentationHugh previously discussed the Council’s work with the outgoing President's Council on Bioethics at its final meeting in March 2009. The new Commission, chaired by Professor Amy Gutmann (President of the University of Pennsylvania), was set up by President Obama in November 2009.Representatives of the Council regularly take part in international, and national, conferences and events, to discuss its work.
