Professor Graham Hart FMedSci has been appointed to the Nuffield Council on Bioethics Governing Board. His term will begin on 1 June.

Members of the Governing Board are appointed by our funders and are responsible for reviewing and challenging our work, providing assurance that we are operating within our remit, and are committing expenditure in line with the terms of our funding and strategic goals, as approved by the funders.

Professor Hart is Professor of Sexual Health and HIV Research and Dean of the Faculty of Population Health Sciences at UCL. His research interests include sexual risk behaviour and the prevention of HIV and STIs, combining structural, behavioural and biomedical approaches to prevention and the opportunities afforded by new prevention technologies. Graham is also co-Director of UCL Health of the Public, bringing multidisciplinary perspectives to health research and education.

Brian Scott, Chair of the Governing Board, said:

“Graham brings wide-ranging expertise on health matters, and particularly in the area of public health. The Governing Board members are confident that Graham will add considerable wisdom to our proceedings, as we continue to support the Council in its important work of illuminating the ethical issues relating to the rapid advancements in bioscience and medicine.”

Professor Hart said:

“I am delighted to join the Governing Board at this challenging but also exciting time. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics has played a key role in current debates on COVID-19, but I know that Council is looking to the future. As a health social scientist I aim to bring a population perspective to the ethical dimensions of biomedical innovation. I look forward to working with the Council, Executive, and Governing Board.”

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics is jointly funded by the Nuffield Foundation, Wellcome, and Medical Research Council (MRC).
