We are seeking a new member of our Governing Board.
The Nuffield Council on Bioethics consists of the Council itself, along with its Executive, and Governing Board (find out more in Governance).
The Council is made up of volunteers from a wide variety of academic and other backgrounds. It is the deliberative body that drives the intellectual function of the organisation by developing the future work programme and the direction, function, and membership of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
The Executive consists of full-time staff that supports the work of the Council by advising and contributing to Council discussions, delivering the work programme, and being responsible for external affairs. It puts forward to Council proposals for the Strategic Plan and future work, and also manages the overall work of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
The Governing Board is also composed of volunteers and is responsible for overseeing the work of the Council and Executive, ensuring that it remains within its topic remit, and is committing expenditure in line with the terms of the grant and the strategic goals as approved by the funders.
The Board meets twice a year to fulfil its strategic and governance responsibilities on behalf of the funders and is available to act at any time as a ‘critical friend’ to, and in support of, the Council Chair and Executive’s Director.
We are now seeking an additional member of the Governing Board of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.

- An interest in, and broad understanding of, bioethics
- A broad understanding of current advances in bioscience and medicine in the UK and internationally
- An appreciation and understanding of professional, political, and public perspectives
- Adherence to the Nolan Principles
Members will serve on the Governing Board for up to three years, following which time the remit of the Board will be reviewed.
The time commitment is expected to be circa six days per year, to include meetings and preparation.
Members will receive reasonable expenses and an honorarium of £3k per annum.
