The Nuffield Council on Bioethics engages in a number of educational activities to encourage discussion of bioethics amongst young people.

This programme of activities is overseen by an Education Advisory Group, which meets regularly to develop initiatives that enable the Council's work to reach a wider audience. The Advisory Group is made up of several Council members together with a number of external members representing a range of teaching backgrounds and subject knowledge. These can include biology, biochemistry, philosophy, religious studies, medical ethics and pedagogy.

We are now seeking to appoint new members to the Education Advisory Group to complement the expertise of current members of the Group. We would particularly welcome expressions of interest from those currently working in or who have practical experience in the following areas:

  • Biology or bioscience teaching at secondary level

  • Humanities teaching at secondary level

  • Using media or drama to engage young people in discussion and debate

Selection for the Advisory Group will be based on:

  • a demonstrable interest in and experience of communicating complex health/social/scientific issues to young people; and

  • for those professionally engaged in teaching, knowledge of how bioethics issues could fit into teaching practices and schemes of work within their institution/subject.

We would welcome some experience of relevant advisory/committee work or contributions to collaborative education initiatives.

Applications are invited in the form of a brief statement, explaining your interest in bioethics and related education, accompanied by a short curriculum vitae. These should be sent to the Communications Manager at the email or postal address below. For more information about the Advisory Group and the current education programme of the Council please see our education pages.

Closing date for expressions of interest: Friday 11 January 2012

Role of Advisory Group, time commitment and expenses

The Advisory Group typically meets quarterly to review and ensure the quality of ongoing educational initiatives such as the production of resources for teaching and the Council’s film competition for students. The group also discuss the Council’s current and future topics in relation to the sorts of educational activities that could derive from them and the most suitable routes for dissemination.

In addition to attending quarterly meetings, members of the Advisory Group will receive occasional email requests, such as requests for feedback on new resources or assistance with dissemination of new schemes of work, though it is not expected that this would take up any more than 1-2 hours per month. The quarterly meetings involve a small amount of preparation, as members will be expected to read and comment on papers that are circulated in advance.

Members of the Advisory Group do not receive remuneration, but reasonable travel expenses are paid.
