GM crops and EU laws: G8 leaders urged to improve choice for African farmers

In a letter to the Prime Minister this week, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics has urged G8 leaders to consider the effect of EU regulations on the use of genetically modified (GM) crops in developing countries.

Launch of the report: 'The ethics of research involving animals'

The ethics of research involving animals report was launched at a public meeting held at the British Library Conference Centre on 25 May 2005. The first session saw Working Party members presenting the findings of the report. This was followed by a general discussion session. 

Over 100 people participated in the meeting, including researchers, journalists, representatives from animal protection groups, organisations representing those involved in animal research and medical charities, MPs, Peers and other members of the public.

Ethics body confronts animal research debate

Improving the quality of the debate and promoting the Three Rs (Refinement, Reduction and Replacement) are crucial to reducing disagreement on animal research, according to a report published today by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.

Follow-up discussion paper on ethics of research in developing countries

The Council has published a follow-up discussion paper to its 2002 report on the ethics of research related to healthcare in developing countries.

The discussion paper explores the practical implications of new and revised guidelines on research from several international organisations. The paper summarises discussions held at a workshop, which the Council co-hosted with the Medical Research Council (MRC) of South Africa, in February 2004 in Cape Town.

The discussion paper covers four topics that the focus of the workshop:

Applying international guidance on healthcare-related research in developing countries in practice is often fraught with difficulty, according to a Discussion Paper published today by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. The ethics of research related to healthcare in developing countries: a follow-up Discussion Paper reports that existing guidelines are often inconsistent and inappropriate for the developing country setting.
